Discover the Ancient Art of Gua Sha

You may have seen Gua Sha tools making their way into the skincare routines of beauty bloggers and celebrities alike—small scrapers crafted from stone or wood. Though they’re a trending facial care accessory, Gua Sha tools are not new; they’re an ancient restorative technique.

Originating over 5,000 years ago in China, Gua Sha translates to “scrape away all the bad” in Chinese, and it has evolved into a highly popular practice in both Europe and America. In fact, Gua Sha has become a favorite among celebrities like Kim Kardashian, Jennifer Aniston, and Gwyneth Paltrow, who swear by its rejuvenating benefits.

My journey with Gua Sha began over a decade ago. I delved deep into studying its techniques, drawing from both Chinese and American traditions. Combining different methods, I’ve created a unique approach to Gua Sha that I regularly share on our social media, in our courses, and here in the Rituals Section, where you’ll find a comprehensive guide to start your Gua Sha journey.

What is Gua Sha?

Gua Sha is a therapeutic massage technique that has been practiced for thousands of years. This technique uses a tool—often referred to as a scraper—to stimulate the skin and promote healing. It’s known for its ability to boost circulation, smooth wrinkles, and enhance skin health.

In the West, Gua Sha tools have gained popularity in beauty salons, skincare stores, and spas, where they’re used to improve facial contours and promote relaxation. This ancient technique, with the help of a simple stone tool, has proven to be an effective way to rejuvenate skin and restore a youthful glow.

Different Types of Gua Sha Tools

I personally have 15 different Gua Sha tools in my collection, and they come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and materials. These tools are ergonomically designed to work on different parts of the face, neck, and body. Depending on the curvature of the scraper, it can guide you naturally to the right spot.

Common materials for Gua Sha tools include:

  • Stones like quartz, jade, bian stone, agate, jasper, and nephrite. These stones are often chosen for their healing properties, which are believed to detoxify the body and enhance circulation.
  • Animal bones and horns, believed to help harmonize energy flow.
  • Metal (brass or copper), often used for their purported ability to improve skin elasticity.
  • Wood and plastic also serve as options for scrapers.

Gua Sha tools are typically heart-shaped, crescent-shaped, fish-like, or even paw-shaped. I’ve had tools break before—my first bian stone and rose quartz scrapers both cracked on a ceramic floor. Handle them with care!

Why Fall in Love with Gua Sha?

I adore Gua Sha for its simplicity, effectiveness, and its ability to be a calming self-care ritual. When you use Gua Sha, blood circulation increases, bringing vital nutrients to the skin and creating a radiant, healthy glow. Additionally, Gua Sha helps:

  • Smooth out wrinkles
  • Reduce puffiness
  • Tighten and firm skin
  • Lighten dark circles
  • Accelerate acne healing
  • Improve skin texture

Furthermore, it stimulates lymphatic drainage, removes toxins, and promotes overall skin oxygenation. For me, it’s more than just a beauty ritual; it’s a meditative practice that slows me down and brings mindfulness to my day.

Gua Sha Technique

There are several techniques you can use, depending on the desired effect:

  • Se-gua: Strong pressure and fast movements.
  • Bu-gua: Slow, gentle movements with light pressure.
  • Ping-bu ping-se: A mix of slow movements with strong pressure.

For daily use, I recommend starting with soft techniques—slow movements and light pressure. More intensive techniques should be reserved for 2-3 times a week.

Before you begin, prepare your skin by cleansing, applying a toner, and adding face oil or essence to ensure the tool glides smoothly.

Is Gua Sha Massage for Everyone?

While Gua Sha is a wonderful addition to most skincare routines, it’s not suitable for everyone. Avoid using Gua Sha if you have:

  • Cancer (above chest level)
  • Hypersensitivity
  • Demodex
  • Skin infections or open wounds

Instead, focus on using the tool on areas that aren’t affected by these conditions.

Gua Sha Tips

Here are some tips to elevate your Gua Sha experience:

  • For a toning effect: Cool your scraper in the fridge for 2-3 minutes before use.
  • For relaxation: Warm your scraper under hot water.

Why Try Gua Sha?

  • Affordability: Invest in a Gua Sha tool and your favorite face oil, and you’ll save money on expensive salon treatments.
  • Simplicity: Gua Sha is easy to learn, even for beginners.
  • Effectiveness: You’ll see noticeable results after just one session—reduced puffiness, a glowing complexion, and brighter eyes.

Convenience: You can practice as often as you like—whether it’s daily or just a few times a week.
